In reply to: On call pay or stipend?
March 7, 2024 at 4:08 pm #42207Tony,
As others have suggested that, as Directors who are on salary, the excess of 40 hours is implied and expected. However I think if you are negotiating your contract an easy contrast can be made on an equity level as compared to other Directors, Curriculum, IT, Food Service, Special Ed, etc that working conditions, on-call, emergencies, weather, etc are unique to our field and considerations should be discussed.

September 27, 2023 at 2:01 pm #41778Good Afternoon,
We use portable A/C’s only in situations of a documented medical issues to maintain a specific temp for a student or staff member not for general building climate control in non-A/C spaces. The portables are very inefficient in what they attempt to do and are essentially a residential piece of equipment. They also do not comply with commercial code as they do not provide any air exchange so you still need to run the spaces HVAC system for air exchange and then attempt to lower the temp using the portable at the same time.

May 31, 2023 at 4:03 pm #41474Good Afternoon,
We did an install in house with our electrician. LED readout boxes on the outside of the walk ins, settable dip switches where you want the alarm points, time delay options for defrost cycle to avoid false alarms and a door open alarm. Twisted pair back to the buildings burg panel, simple programming for the Alarm Co on what you want the email to say and how it displays at Central Station when they get the alarm. They then do callouts per the contact list. Pays for itself when it saves a box full of product.
Call me with any questions.

I agree with Don. I have used Associated for the last 5 years or so and have been satisfied with response and costs.

March 27, 2023 at 3:42 pm #41167Good Afternoon,
We currently are doing $300.00/ year split 50/50 paid out in December and June since some employed cannot seem to last 12 months. I would like to transition to a uniform program with embroidered shirts. If anyone can suggest a vendor that has provided good service at a reasonable cost I would appreciate the input.

In reply to: AHERA -Testing & Programming firms
January 20, 2023 at 10:56 am #40937Chris,
I use Hub Testing Laboratory for all my AHERA program management, training and sampling. I have been working with them for a long time and they do a thorough job. They also help me with pre-construction hazmat clearance work and abatement specs and hygienist services if it goers there. Any questions give me a call.

In reply to: Well/Drinking Water Operators
January 11, 2023 at 6:30 pm #40870Hi Christina,
I oversee two PWS’s as part of my daily fun and also currently use W&S as contract operator. I had an inhouse licensed operator who was also a HC for me but he retired. I would like to return to that eventually but it is a uncommon merger of tasks and talent.

In reply to: Experience with Linoleum and LVT Plank Flooring in New Schools
May 11, 2022 at 5:13 pm #40192Hi Joe,
I was fortunate enough to build a school in 2011 with NORA Grano throughout. I pushed for this in the design phase along with glazed block walls (don’t laugh) among other durable low maintenance materials throughout. The basis for this at the time was getting the outliers to think in terms of lifecycle cost and not installed cost. After 11 years the Nora remains a home run with daily maintenance of ionized water only using the Tennant ECHO Autoscrubbers. It wears like iron and still looks great. Since then I have not done a lot of Nora, not because it lost favor with me but outside of a subsidized MSBA project it can be challenging with annual maintenance budgets or W/A type funding. I have not slipped back to VCT (hopefully my last VCT install has already occurred) I have shifted to Mannington LVT tile. I did a whole school (hallways only) back in 2017 and it is holding up fine. There factory adhesives both tile applied and substrate applied is very moisture forgiving without add mixtures or other mitigations. Microfiber maintenance seams to be the preference along with an attentive furniture glide program to prevent scratching. It checks the box to continue to work towards getting out of stripping and waxing dominance of budgets, manpower and schedules. Feel free to contact me for further info.
Good Luck,

In reply to: Replacement clock system
April 28, 2022 at 12:27 pm #40159Bob,
I have had good luck buying replacement clocks for various clock system makes with various voltages, 24V and 120V from American Time. Presently I am looking at resurrecting an old Simplex system using an American Time controller and American time clocks.
Any questions feel free to call.

Brian,
I have not worked with the firm you mentioned. In general the utilities through project expeditiers (PEX) offer these programs as a turn back required by law and DPU requirements for monies collected from all rate payers to facilitate energy efficiency incentives for its customers. The good news is that the money can be a welcome for budget challenged public facility types like ourselves. I have done many of these in various forms and found two constants. The engineering around the “proposed measures” is usually weal or absent. They highlight consumption deltas and cost savings. This usually excites non facility types in our organizations. The second is Town Committees focused on Green, Carbon Reduction, etc can be proponents but like others outside of our facilities sphere lack the full picture of what we need in a complete scope. I recommend proving the engineering of the proposed measure including a detailed sequence of operations if it is HVAC controls related and having equipment submittal review/approval control. On bill financing through your utility can be helpful as well if needed.

September 2, 2021 at 12:39 pm #39386Mike,
George and Joe both raise valid points. the supervision and functional independence would be keys points for me otherwise it spreads your oversight even thinner. Good thing I cant get any maintenance staff so I don’t need to worry about that, lol.

July 9, 2021 at 12:53 pm #39097Ed,
I built a new school with it throughout. Great product. It is apples and grapefruits compared to VCT. Price point wise it will run 2x-3x more. Where it works out in your favor is life cycle costing versus initial costing. No strip, no wax. Huge lifecycle savings on materials and labor. Drop me a call with any questions.
