September 9, 2019 at 2:01 pm #35958Great question to which there is no simple answer. I am willing to bet that there isn’t one of us that doesn’t regularly wake up in the middle of the night thinking about things that we forgot to do, or have on the to-do list for the next day, or should have done differently. For me, I try to find other things to occupy my mind when I am off duty, things that require a lot of focus to help keep work thoughts from creeping in when I am at home. I read a lot of (non-work related) books, typically have a woodworking project going and spend a lot of time caring for my vegetable garden, fruit trees and berry bushes. The grand kids help a lot too.
Good luck!

November 30, 2018 at 9:31 am #34716In Newburyport we have Home Depot charge cards linked to our Supplyworks account, so all billing comes from Supplyworks. We get the bulk of our supplies from the local Home Depot, but order quite a bit from the Supplyworks website as well. We also use a couple of local hardware store using blanket POs.

August 29, 2018 at 5:40 pm #34116Power went off in Newburyport for about 15 seconds which was enough to send our control systems into a tailspin. It took a good 30-45 minutes to get everything back up and running and by that time classroom temperatures had soared. The high school never recovered.

February 28, 2018 at 9:01 am #33343All of our staff have been issued fobs. We had the installers do the initial programming of the fobs from a list of staff that we provided. Different staff have different access schedules (i.e. custodians 24/7, most teachers M-F 6am to 6pm). I do most of the deactivations and issue new fobs, some are done by an Administrative Assistant at the Central Office. It literally takes a minute or two. Police and Fire also have fobs for our buildings. We probably have 400 to 500 active fobs.

January 2, 2018 at 9:46 am #33152We were actually completely shut down for the week except for basketball practices in the high school gym. Our Head of Maintenance made several building checks throughout the week and I monitored building temperatures through the energy management system. We had a few mechanical issues and one fire alarm from a faulty detector, but fortunately no freeze-ups. We also set everything back to occupied on New Years Day to make sure the buildings were sufficiently warmed for the return of staff and students today.

December 8, 2017 at 8:34 am #33081We have a $200 clothing allowance from which they can order from a list of pre-approved items from a specific vendor. The list was developed by a member of our maintenance staff working with the sales rep, and then approved by me. It includes shoes, shirts, sweatshirts, pants and jackets.

December 6, 2017 at 1:00 pm #33063In Newburyport we have separate maintenance and custodial departments. The skill sets are very different, especially with newer technologically advanced buildings. We do have a “Contracted Services” budget of about $20K per building for jobs that are beyond the ability or scope that the maintenance guys can handle, but we have been fortunate to be able to build up a maintenance department with guys with some good skills so we can take care of most things in house.
