In reply to: Are You Installing Portable Air Filtration Units in Classrooms?
November 2, 2020 at 10:57 am #38585I outfitted both my elementary schools with Air Purifiers with HEPA Filters in every classroom(70 rooms total). One thing I can say is it gave a sense of relief to the teachers and shows the teachers Unions that we are in-fact addressing air flow and quality in the classrooms. We also performed an Air Flow exchange rate analysis. The purifiers I purchased provide a 250 cfm exchange rate with no windows and no additional air flow systems running and in one room supplied 11 exchanges per hour.
I instructed my teachers to place them up by where they are teaching as the students are all speaking in towards the teacher if the rooms are set up per the DESE guidelines. The purifiers pull in air 360 degrees so they work great. The other good location would be centralized in the classroom providing it does not cause a tripping hazard.
I felt it was a great investment overall and the purchase would be covered under the Cares Act.
Any questions please reach out

In reply to: Facilities Staff Vacation, Sick, Persone;
November 1, 2019 at 8:31 am #36337Hi Steve
Our guys accrue Vacation time on the basis of – 2 weeks for 0-7 years of service – 3 weeks for 8 years and beyond.
Sick time is accrued (15) days per year
Personal time is up to 2 days per year but it is not given to them it is “granted” to them at the administrations discretion.
Their time resets on July 1 of each year. We just completed negotiations in the summer – they can carry over up to 5 vacation days per year. Our black out period is from Aug 15th to the start of school.
Hope this helps

October 21, 2019 at 9:09 am #36304I was carrying 2 phones but it gets tiresome after awhile especially on weekends. I transitioned to one phone and one number – made it much simpler.
In reply to: Installing LED light bulbs
May 22, 2019 at 9:27 am #35621I did 13 of these LED upgrade projects throughout schools, public safety and municipal buildings when I was working for Somerville. Each time I used the Utilities Municipal Incentive Program (Eversource in Somerville) – which allows you to avoid procurement procedures providing you follow the guidelines. Projects have to be under $100k per measure (lights, controls, therms each considered a measure) , per building. I had worked with Derrek Brown from AECOM as my vendor which made the whole process a lot simpler. You would need to use a utilities PEX vendor (AECOM was such a vendor) for these projects but again it really makes the whole process smoother and simpler
Good Luck

January 21, 2016 at 3:15 pm #18361Hi Steve,
Don’t know about American Plant. Too far north for me. I believe Johnson Controls uses a company that they subcontract with to perform trap audits. Check with your local Johnson Controls guy. I thought you had them in previously for some work in your building?
Good luck,

January 21, 2016 at 3:15 pm #18360Don’t know about American Plant Maintenance we use P.J. Kennedy here in Newton. They are not big on the survey but good on the replacement.
In the past I have used R.D. Kimbal in Andover and O’Leary from Norwood for surveys and they were both pretty good.

January 21, 2016 at 3:15 pm #18358I would second Musco. You can probably have an electrician throw up some lights for a lot less, but Musco’s technology will pay off down the road.
